چکیده

HANKEN, J . 1983. High incidence of limb skeletal variants in a peripheral population of the red-backed salamander, Plethodon cinereus (Amphibia: Plethodontidae), from Nova Scotia. Can. J . 2001. 61: 1925193 1. A single population of Plethodon cinereus from northwestern Nova Scotia shows a high incidence of limb skeletal variants, which is exceptional for this morphologically conservative species. Included are nine carpal patterns and five tarsal patterns, which result from the variable occurrence of 11 different combinations of fused adjacent mesopodial elements, and frequent absence of one or more ossified phalanges; one instance of increased phalangeal number also is noted. Primitive plethodontid carpal and tarsal patterns, which characterize P. cinereus from other parts of its range, occur in 69 and 7 1 % of the carpi and tarsi examined, respectively. Modal phalangeal formulae also are those typical of P. cinereus generally. Several mesopodial variants resemble those seen in other plethodontid genera; they may have appeared independently in P . cinereus. Others are unique to this population. Both the genetic basis and geographical extent of this variation are unknown.

An Erythristic Morph of Red-Backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) Collected in Virginia

Eight different color polymorphisms of the Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) have been described throughout its range. Among them, the erythristic phenotype is a mimetic morph with coloration patterns similar to that of toxic Eastern Newt efts (Notophthalmus viridescens). We describe an erythristic morph of P. cinereus collected at Mountain Lake Biological Station, Virginia. To our kno...

Amputation Level - Dependent Patterning in Urodele Limb Regeneration

Comparison of mesopodial skeletal patterns found in native and regenerated limbs of the salamander Plethodon cinereus reveals variant patterns unique to each group. Variant patterns in native limbs are based on fusions between laterally adjacent elements (i.e., in the anteroposterior axis). Variant patterns in the rnesopodia of regenerated limbs usually exhibit fusions among proximodistally adj...

Do larval traits re-evolve? Evidence from the embryogenesis of a direct-developing salamander, Plethodon cinereus.

Recent molecular phylogenies suggest the surprising reacquisition of posthatching metamorphosis within an otherwise direct-developing clade of lungless salamanders (family Plethodontidae). Metamorphosis was long regarded as plesiomorphic for plethodontids, yet the genus Desmognathus, which primarily includes metamorphosing species, is now nested within a much larger clade of direct-developing s...

Geographic Variation in Genetic Dominance of the Color Morphs of the Red-Backed Salamander, PLETHODON CINEREUS.

Female parent-offspring phenotypic data on color morph frequencies in the red-backed salamander, Plethodon cinereus, were obtained from two Virginia localities (164 broods from Greene County and 97 broods from Giles County). The color morph data indicate that the striped morph is genetically dominant in Giles County and recessive in Greene County. It is suggested that epistatic interaction of t...

Histology and ultrastructure of the caudal courtship glands of the red-backed salamander, Plethodon cinereus (Amphibia: Plethodontidae).

Caudal courtship glands (CCGs) are sexually dimorphic glands described in the skin of the dorsal tail base of some male salamanders in the genera Desmognathus, Eurycea, and Plethodon in the family Plethodontidae. These glands are believed to deliver pheromones to females during courtship, when the female rests her chin on the dorsal tail base during the stereotypic tail straddling walk unique t...
